In a communiqué issued after its National Administrative Council (NAC) meeting in Abuja on Wednesday, NLC President Joe Ajaero condemned the hike, describing it as a harsh and unfair burden on Nigerians already grappling with economic hardship.
“To express our collective opposition to this arbitrary tariff hike, the NLC will embark on a nationwide mass rally on Tuesday, February 4, 2025,” Ajaero stated.
He warned that the increase, coupled with the surging cost of living, could push millions deeper into financial distress.
“A population earning a minimum wage of only N70,000 is already burdened with skyrocketing food prices, fuel costs, electricity tariff hikes, and worsening inflation. Adding a telecom tariff increase to this is unacceptable,” he said.
The labor leader called on all NLC affiliates, state councils, and civil society groups to mobilize for the protest, urging Nigerians to stand against policies that exacerbate poverty and inequality.
Ajaero demanded the immediate suspension of the 50% tariff hike and called on the Federal Government, the NCC, and the National Assembly to engage in meaningful dialogue with stakeholders to reassess the tariff adjustment.
“If the government fails to heed our call, we will escalate our actions, including the possibility of a nationwide boycott of telecom services and further mass protests,” he warned.
The NLC reaffirmed its commitment to resisting policies that undermine the welfare and dignity of Nigerian workers and citizens, vowing not to relent in the struggle against exploitative economic measures.
