Enugu, Jan. 26, 2025 (NAN) – The Enugu State Government has set an ambitious goal of creating 792,000 jobs in the renewable energy, waste management, and reforestation sectors by 2060. This was revealed by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Prof. Chidiebere Onyia, following the State Executive Council (EXCO) meeting in Enugu on Sunday.
Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe! In a move to address climate change and promote sustainable development, the Enugu State Government approved the Enugu State Climate Policy and Action Plan (ESCPAP), becoming the first subnational government in Nigeria to adopt a comprehensive long-term climate strategy. This plan includes emissions modelling, microenergy audits, and a focus on climate resilience.
Prof. Onyia further disclosed that the government had also approved the Enugu State Off-Grid Electrification Policy Strategy Plan, aimed at improving electricity access in unserved and underserved communities. By leveraging renewable energy solutions, the state intends to stimulate economic growth and enhance public service delivery.
“This action plan will drive economic growth and create significant employment opportunities. We are projecting the creation of 792,000 jobs in renewable energy, waste management, and reforestation by 2060,” Onyia stated. He also noted that the state’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) is expected to increase by 25 times by 2060 through investments in green technology, sustainable agriculture, and renewable energy.
As part of the energy transition goals, Enugu plans to achieve 80% renewable energy usage by 2060, reduce emissions in the transport sector by 60%, and implement an extensive afforestation plan to enhance carbon sequestration.
The ESCPAP also reflects Gov. Peter Mbah’s commitment to balancing economic growth with environmental sustainability, innovation, and inclusiveness. Onyia explained that the strategy will ensure key sectors like agriculture, energy, and natural resources remain climate-resilient and future-proofed.
Additionally, the plan includes the formation of an ESCPAP Implementation Committee, which will involve government officials, the private sector, civil society, and international donors to ensure effective execution. The state also plans to introduce a climate change curriculum in Enugu’s Smart Green Schools, to equip future generations with the skills needed for green innovation.
On the Off-Grid Policy, Onyia explained that it complements the Enugu Electricity Law passed in 2023. The policy aims to catalyze private sector investment, promote socio-economic growth, and improve the quality of life for Enugu residents by recognizing the importance of distributed renewable energy solutions such as solar, wind, hydro, and biomass.
All these initiatives align with the Mbah administration’s goal to grow Enugu’s economy to $30 billion by 2031.
