Nigerian singer Darlington Achakpo, popularly known as Speed Darlington (Akpi), has shared a video revealing how he narrowly avoided an alleged assassination attempt.

The video was released on his Instagram page days after his release from prolonged detention in Kuje prison.

The singer said the incident happened during the early hours of Monday when he was leaving a club on Victoria Island in Lagos State.

Darlington revealed that unknown gunmen shot at his car multiple times, leaving it severely damaged. In the video, several bullet holes are seen at the back of his car.

“Long face sent killers my way, and I have not even posted anything. Bro, is this necessary? You tried to take my life. Really?” he said, visibly shaken in the video.

Darlington was arrested on November 27 during a performance in Owerri, Imo State. He was arrested for allegedly defaming fellow singer, Burna Boy, whose real name is Damini Ogulu.

Before Darlington’s release from prison, SaharaReporters reported that despite an explicit order from the Federal High Court in Abuja, the police had refused to release him.

The court ruled that Darlington’s arrest and detention constituted “a gross violation” of his rights to dignity, liberty, expression, and  movement under Chapter IV of the Nigerian Constitution.

SaharaReporters had also reported that Speed Darlington filed a N300 million fundamental rights enforcement suit against the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun over his alleged unlawful detention.
