Speaking to multiple sources including a shop owner close to the highway, SaharaReporters learned that the incident happened when a trailer clashed with one other vehicle conveying cows and passengers from Ilorin to the Southwest region
“The incident happened yesterday evening. I was in my shop when I heard the shout and I saw people rushing to the road. I went there and what I saw was gory. The accident was a terrible one,” a shop owner told SaharaReporters.
“I can’t say this is the figure of those who died. But I can say more than 10 people died,” the source added.
Another source who also confirmed the incident to SaharaReporters said several other persons sustained varying degrees of injury in the auto crash.
Relevant authorities and policemen were present at the scene to take control of the situation, while the injured victims were rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment.
Bodies of the deceased victims were said to have been evacuated by their families.
The cause of the accident is still under investigation; however, it was gathered that reckless driving and excessive speeding contributed to the tragic incident.
A gory viral video of the incident recorded by one of the rescuers shows the truck on its side with over 10 corpses scattered on the road.
A voice is heard calling on the government to take drastic measures to halt the frequent accidents on that corridor that had claimed several lives lately.
A senior FRSC officer in Kwara who also spoke to Channels TV said 15 people died in the multiple crash while three were injured.
The FRSC Sector Commander, Muftau Irekeola, also confirmed the incident to Channels TV.
Mr Muftau said: “But I am still waiting for the details from my boys in Olooru unit.”
“That we have 15 casualties may not be far from the truth but I am still waiting for details. I am waiting for the details from my boys. It was a multiple accident involving a trailer and one Canter truck,” he added.
