Netflix has announced price hikes for most of its U.S. subscription plans, including a $2.50 increase for its standard plan, which will now cost $17.99 per month. The ad-supported plan will rise from $6.99 to $7.99, while the premium plan will increase from $22.99 to $24.99. The company is also raising prices in Canada, Portugal, and Argentina.
Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe! These adjustments reflect an industry-wide trend as streaming platforms, including Disney and Warner Bros. Discovery’s Max, turn to higher prices and ad-supported plans to drive profitability. Netflix introduced its ad-supported tier in November 2022 to counter slowing subscriber growth, and the plan has since attracted 70 million global monthly active users.
In addition to raising prices, Netflix has enforced measures to limit password sharing, requiring users to pay for “extra members” on their accounts. The cost of adding extra members on the standard plan without ads will increase from $7.99 to $8.99 per month. Extra members on ad-supported plans will not see a price change.
The strategy appears to be effective, as Netflix added 19 million new paid memberships in the fourth quarter of 2024, marking a record-breaking performance. The surge in subscriptions has pushed the company’s total subscriber base to over 300 million globally.
