Leadership Transition
Meranda’s election on Monday followed the impeachment of Mudashiru Obasa, whose 10-year tenure ended after more than two-thirds of the 40-member Assembly voted to remove him over alleged misconduct.
Obasa, representing Agege Constituency I, had served in the House since 2007 and as Speaker since 2015. His impeachment marked a significant shift in the Assembly’s leadership.
Upholding Integrity
Speaking on the development, Abiodun Tobun, a member of the Assembly representing Epe Constituency I, stated that Obasa’s removal was a unanimous decision aimed at preserving the “sanctity” and “integrity” of the House.
“The Constitution grants the House authority to regulate its proceedings. Members felt it was time for a change, and we unanimously agreed to elect Rt Hon Mojisola Meranda Lasbat as the new Speaker,” Tobun said.
He emphasized the Assembly’s commitment to its constituents and the state, stating that the leadership change was necessary to restore the House’s credibility.
Meranda’s election signals a new chapter in the legislative history of Lagos State, with lawmakers pledging to maintain high standards of governance and accountability.
