The Federal Government has stated that climate-smart agriculture will address the impact of climate change to ensure resilient food security.
Sen. Aliyu Abdullahi, Minister of State for Agriculture and Food Security, made this statement at the Agricultural Insurance train-the-trainer workshop on Wednesday in Abuja.
Abdullahi emphasised the need for a climate risk mitigation solution to address protection gaps arising from climate change risks such as floods, droughts, pests, and diseases.
“We are witnessing the clear and present existential threats of climate change and its impact on our local food systems.
“It is evident that climate change is real, and it has become inevitable to integrate insurance as a key component of our National Agricultural Growth Scheme Agro-Pocket (NAGS-AP) programme to ensure sustainability and food security.”
He noted that the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Tinubu aimed to address this through the deployment of climate-smart agriculture for a resilient food security system.
“Climate-smart agriculture remains the only means for adapting to climate change,” he said.
Abdullahi added that incorporating Agricultural Insurance into the NAGS-AP programme would mitigate the risk of exposure to natural perils.
He highlighted the success of the NAGS-AP programme, which commenced in the 2023 dry season with wheat cultivation, resulting in a bountiful harvest.(NAN)
