The NBS Transport Fare Watch Report indicated that the average fare for a single journey on domestic flights rose to ₦98,561.74, up from ₦78,775.74 in July 2023.

The report noted a month-on-month increase of 9.65% from June 2024, when the average fare was ₦89,947.73. This hike follows the federal government’s announcement of further tax increases, which have sparked complaints from the Airline Operators of Nigeria about multiple taxation issues.

Despite the spike in airfares, other transportation modes saw a decline in costs. Bus fares within cities decreased by 2.18% to ₦942.61 in July 2024, down from ₦963.58 in June 2024 and 29.46% lower than ₦1,336.29 a year earlier. Intercity bus fares rose slightly by 0.35% month-on-month to ₦7,117.17.

Motorcycle (Okada) fares increased by 1.22% from June 2024, reaching ₦483.33, but showed a year-on-year decline of 25.20% from ₦646.12. Water transport fares fell by 0.44% to ₦1,403.06 in July 2024, marking a slight decrease of 0.26% compared to the previous year.

State-wise, Anambra recorded the highest intercity bus fare at ₦9,566.89, while Kwara had the lowest at ₦5,518.38. For city bus journeys, Taraba had the highest fare at ₦1,457.28, and Adamawa recorded the lowest at ₦500.00.
