The Nigerian Police Force has issued a stern warning against the display of foreign flags and calls for a military takeover during the ongoing #EndBadGovernance protests, labeling such actions as treasonable felonies under Nigerian law. This announcement follows reports of protesters waving Russian flags in Bauchi, Kano, Kaduna, and Katsina states.
Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe! In a statement released on Tuesday, Force Public Relations Officer ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi emphasized that these actions undermine Nigeria’s sovereignty and pose a significant threat to national security. The statement detailed the police’s ongoing investigations, which have already led to the arrest of over ninety suspects, including those involved in the production and distribution of the foreign flags.
Adejobi explained, “The display of foreign flags and calls for a military takeover constitute clear treasonable offenses, revealing the motives of protest organizers to destabilize Nigeria’s democratic government. This aligns with actionable intelligence on the tactics of fifth columnists and non-state actors exploiting economic hardship protests for their nefarious goals.”
He added that tensions from the protests had eased following President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s address on August 4, 2024. However, some groups continue to engage in subversive activities, including violent and unlawful protests characterized by the destruction of property, looting, and the display of foreign flags.
The Inspector General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, has directed Deputy Inspectors General of Police for the Northwest and Northeast zones to oversee operations in the affected states and prevent further violence. The police reiterated that using foreign flags during protests and openly calling for a military takeover is a capital offense under Nigerian law.
Adejobi also cautioned Nigerian youths to be wary of individuals and groups turning protests into business ventures, funded by local or foreign sponsors aiming to destabilize the country. He urged the public to remain vigilant and cooperate with law enforcement to maintain peace and stability.
“The Nigeria Police Force remains committed to maintaining peace, protecting the nation’s heritage, and working with the public to ensure the safety and stability of Nigeria,” Adejobi concluded.
