U.S. Imposes Sanctions on Kaspersky Lab Executives Over Cybersecurity Concerns

WASHINGTON, June 21 (Reuters) – The Biden administration imposed sanctions on 12 senior leaders at AO Kaspersky Lab on Friday, citing cybersecurity risks. This move follows the announcement to ban the sale of the Russian company’s antivirus software in the U.S.

The sanctions target key executives, including the chief business development officer, chief operating officer, legal officer, and corporate communications chief, among others.

“Today’s action against the leadership of Kaspersky Lab underscores our commitment to ensure the integrity of our cyber domain and to protect our citizens against malicious cyber threats,” said Treasury Under Secretary Brian Nelson in a statement.

A Kaspersky spokesperson condemned the sanctions as “unjustified and baseless,” asserting that the measures would not impact the company’s resilience since they do not affect the parent or subsidiary companies or its CEO, Eugene Kaspersky. The company also denied any government ties or connections between the designated officials and Russian military or intelligence authorities.

These actions reflect the Biden administration’s efforts to mitigate the risk of Russian cyberattacks associated with Kaspersky software, amid ongoing tensions with Moscow over the Ukraine conflict. The U.S. has largely exhausted other sanction options against Russia.

Kaspersky Lab’s Russian units were added to a Commerce trade-restriction list on Thursday for allegedly collaborating with Russian military intelligence. This was accompanied by a ban on sales, resales, and software updates for Kaspersky products in the U.S. starting September 29.

U.S. authorities argue that Kaspersky software poses significant risks due to potential Russian government influence, its deep access to computer systems, and its capacity to install malware or withhold critical updates.

The sanctions announced on Friday prohibit American companies or citizens from conducting financial transactions with the sanctioned executives and freeze their assets held in the United States.
