During his visit, Olumide Akpata referred to himself as a “son of the palace” while expressing his admiration for the king and stating the Labour Party’s aspiration to govern the state.

However, Oba Ewuare II swiftly interjected, clarifying that while Olumide Akpata is indeed a respected son of Benin soil, it would be inaccurate for him to claim to be a “son of the palace.”

The monarch explained, “When I heard him say he is the son of the palace, I had to speak to my people to know if any of my sons is now involved in politics. I acknowledge him as a well-known son of the soil. In fact, when he was to become the Nigerian Bar Association President, I called (Nasir) El-Rufai to let him know that this is our son and he is a son of the soil in Benin.”

Oba Ewuare II emphasized the need for clarity amidst the presence of the media and other witnesses, stating, “The fourth realm of the estate is here and others, I just need to clarify that.”

In response, Olumide Akpata apologized for his statement, acknowledging his error and expressing regret for equating the entirety of Benin to the palace in his remarks.

The incident occurred amid preparations for the Edo State governorship election scheduled for September 21, 2024.
