In a statement to PREMIUM TIMES, PJ Morton shared the unique process behind creating the album. “I wanted to capture the emotions I felt while on the continent,” Morton explained. “I promised myself I wouldn’t write anything before arriving in Africa and wouldn’t write anything after leaving. I ended up recording all my vocals before I left, too. It was an experiment in trusting my instincts.”

“Cape Town to Cairo” showcases Morton’s musical versatility, blending R&B, soul, gospel, pop, and jazz with rich African influences to create a unique and captivating sound. The album features collaborations with prominent African artists such as Fireboy DML, Mádé Kuti, Asa, Ndabo Zulu, and the Soweto Spiritual Singers, along with contributions from Morton’s band and local musicians.

Tracks like “Smoke & Mirrors,” recorded a day after celebrating Fela Kuti’s birthday in Lagos, and “Simunye (We Are One),” featuring the Soweto Spiritual Singers, highlight the deep connection to African music and culture. The song “Who You Are,” featuring Mádé Kuti, explores themes of ancestry and identity, while “Count On Me” with Fireboy DML delivers an uplifting message about friendship and unity.

In addition to the album, PJ Morton is celebrating several other milestones this month. Tiana’s Bayou Adventure at Disney World debuted with Morton’s original soundtrack and theme song “Special Spice,” marking him as the first Black composer to write music for a Disney attraction. Morton also announced his memoir, “Saturday Night, Sunday Morning,” will be published on November 12, chronicling his journey from a preacher’s kid to a prominent figure in the music industry, including collaborations with legends like Stevie Wonder and Erykah Badu.

Morton’s journey continues with the “Cape Town to Cairo Tour,” which will cover North America and beyond, with performances in major venues such as NYC’s Beacon Theatre and Nashville’s Ryman Auditorium.

With his new album, Disney project, and upcoming memoir, PJ Morton is set for a year full of extraordinary adventures and achievements.
