Residents reported waking up to find multiple vehicles engulfed in flames. A video clip circulating on social media, and reviewed by PREMIUM TIMES, shows at least five vehicles destroyed, including two pickup trucks, two buses, and a tricycle truck. One of the pickup trucks was only partially burned.

No group has claimed responsibility for the attack.

Police Confirmation
The police spokesperson in Anambra State, Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed the incident, noting that no lives were lost. He stated that four of the vehicles belonged to local vigilante operatives.

Mr. Ikenga, a deputy superintendent of police, detailed that the gunmen arrived on motorcycles and one vehicle, firing indiscriminately. They met resistance from vigilante operatives until the police response team arrived, causing the attackers to flee due to the superior firepower of the security forces.

In response, the deputy commissioner of police in charge of operations led a joint security force, including personnel from the Nigerian Army, Navy, and other agencies, to the scene for an on-the-spot assessment. Efforts are ongoing to apprehend the culprits.

Police Response
Commissioner of Police Nnaghe Obono condemned the attack and commended the security operatives for their bravery. He assured residents that the police would continue collaborating with other security agencies to combat crime in the state.

Worsening Insecurity
Anambra State, like other South-east states in Nigeria, has seen a rise in security challenges, with frequent attacks targeting security agencies, government officials, and facilities. The Nigerian government has accused the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) of orchestrating these attacks, but the group has repeatedly denied involvement.

IPOB is a group advocating for an independent state of Biafra, which it wants to be carved out from the South-east and parts of the South-south regions of Nigeria.
