Nigeria Seize N3 Billion Worth of Illicit Drugs, Including Cannabis from Canada

LAGOS, June 14 (Reuters)** – The Nigerian Customs Service, led by Comptroller General Wale Adeniyi, has seized illicit drugs valued at over N3 billion through its Tincan Island command. Among the confiscated items was Cannabis Sativa reportedly imported from Canada.

In addition to the cannabis, the Customs Service intercepted several cartons of cough syrup. The crackdown forms part of a broader operation to curb smuggling and illegal drug trafficking within the country.

Comptroller Kehinde Ejibunu, leader of Operation Whirlwind, highlighted the ongoing efforts, revealing that smuggled Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), or petrol, worth ₦106 million, was confiscated over seven days. A total of 26,950 liters of petroleum products, valued at ₦19 million, was intercepted while being smuggled into the Republic of Benin.

Notable seizures included:
– 121 kegs of PMS (25 liters each, totaling 3,025 liters) intercepted at Oyinkansola Global Concept along Badagry/Seme road, Lagos State, on May 31, 2024.
– 77 drums of PMS (616 kegs of 25 liters, totaling 15,400 liters) seized on June 7, 2024, at Seayab Petroleum along Imeko/Obada road, Ogun State, transported via a truck with registration number 95D4244D.
– Another 100 kegs of PMS (25 liters each, totaling 2,500 liters) impounded on June 8, 2024, along Owode/Atan road, Ogun State.
– 141 kegs of PMS (25 liters each, totaling 6,025 liters) seized at Julankoly Oil and Gas along Owode/Ilaro road.

The Nigerian Customs Service continues its vigilant efforts to combat smuggling and illegal trade, ensuring the security and economic stability of the nation.
