IPOB Leader Nnamdi Kanu Denied Legal Access Ahead of Trial, Legal Team Alleges DSS Obstruction

Date:

The legal team representing Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has accused Nigeria’s Department of State Services (DSS) of obstructing their ability to prepare for Kanu’s upcoming trial on June 19 and 20. The team claims that the DSS denied them access to meet with Kanu, despite a court order allowing such meetings, thereby undermining the prospects of a fair trial.

In a statement issued on Friday, the legal team described this denial as a direct violation of judicial orders and an attempt to frustrate the legal process. “As the hearing date draws near, the DSS continues to hinder Nnamdi Kanu’s right to a fair trial,” the statement, signed by Aloy Ejimakor for the Legal Team, declared.

Kanu, who has been in detention since June 2021 following his rendition from Kenya, was supposed to meet with his legal team to prepare for the upcoming trial. However, the DSS insisted that team members meet with Kanu individually rather than as a group, prompting the legal team to leave the DSS facility without meeting him.

“This latest disobedience of a subsisting court order by the DSS is symbolic of what has become an executive self-indictment of the trial that the government and the Court insist must take place,” the statement read.

The legal team warned that they would resist any trial that does not adhere to constitutional standards, questioning the Attorney General and Minister for Justice’s persistence in prosecuting the case under such circumstances. “If they do not obey a simple court order that is directly geared to giving them the trial they so much desire, why then is the AGF still bent on prosecuting the case?” they asked.

They further argued that blocking avenues for a fair hearing is indicative of the case’s lack of merit and urged the government to discontinue the case if they are unwilling to ensure a fair trial. “Otherwise, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu and his legal team will resist any trial that is against the tenets of the Constitution,” they concluded.
