Located along Agric Road in the Igando-Ikotun Local Council Development Area (LCDA), the housing scheme comprises 270 units spread across a vast land area of 17.358 hectares.
Originally conceptualized in 2001 by the Lagos State Ministry of Housing, the project encountered numerous setbacks, including financial constraints and policy shifts, leading to its abandonment. However, under Governor Sanwo-Olu’s leadership, renewed efforts were undertaken to revitalize the initiative, culminating in its completion.
The Egan-Igando Mixed Housing Scheme aims to provide decent accommodation for suburban dwellers, offering a mix of 1, 2, and 3-bedroom apartments across 101 blocks. Despite facing challenges over the years, the project has now emerged as a beacon of hope for the community, transforming a once-neglected site into a vibrant residential enclave.
Speaking at the unveiling ceremony, Governor Sanwo-Olu reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to addressing the pressing need for affordable housing in Lagos. He pledged to expedite the completion of the remaining 576 home units in subsequent phases, emphasizing inclusivity and community engagement as guiding principles.
The governor urged beneficiaries to take ownership of the project and safeguard it against vandalism, underscoring the importance of collective responsibility in maintaining public infrastructure. Additionally, he called for enhanced collaboration with the private sector to expand housing opportunities for Lagos residents.
In recognition of the subscribers’ unwavering support, Governor Sanwo-Olu approved special allocations for existing beneficiaries, demonstrating his administration’s appreciation for their trust and commitment. This gesture reflects a broader commitment to fostering partnerships and driving socio-economic development across the state.
Commissioner for Housing, Moruf Akinderu-Fatai, lauded the completion of the housing estate as a landmark achievement, attributing its success to Governor Sanwo-Olu’s visionary leadership. He reiterated the government’s resolve to overcome any remaining challenges and ensure the timely delivery of all promised units.
Local community leaders, including the Chairman of Igando-Ikotun LCDA and traditional ruler Oba Lasisi Gbadamosi, commended Governor Sanwo-Olu for transforming the landscape and enhancing security in the area. They expressed gratitude for the government’s intervention, which has revitalized the community and curtailed criminal activities.
