Nollywood veteran Hanks Anuku has opened up about the distress caused by a viral video falsely portraying him as mentally unstable, shedding light on its detrimental effects on his career and personal life.

The video, which circulated in 2022, depicted Anuku dressed in ragged attire and appearing to converse with himself, sparking widespread concerns about his mental well-being.

Amidst the speculation, fellow actress Shan George came to Anuku’s defense, vehemently denying the allegations and affirming his mental soundness.

In a recent interview with content creator Lucky Udu, Anuku clarified the origins of the video, revealing that it was taken on a movie set where he was preparing for a role that required him to portray a mentally unstable character. He explained that he was immersing himself in the environment to perfect his performance as per the director’s vision.

“I was trying to get into character for a role I was going to play, a madman role. Someone who was not in his correct senses or right frame of mind,” Anuku explained. “So I had to go naturally visit the environment on how I would play it in that same neighborhood. I was just showing the way the director wanted me to do it, meditating and getting into character.”

Anuku vehemently refuted rumors of drug use or illness, asserting his sanity and emphasizing that the footage was simply a portrayal for cinematic purposes.

“They said a lot of stuff. They said I was sick, on drugs, I am not sick, I was not on drugs,” Anuku emphasized. “Maybe they saw me depressed, depression can bring stress. But me being on drugs, that’s not true: I am not a madman, I am very sane.”

The aftermath of the video took a toll on Anuku, resulting in a loss of friendships, job opportunities, and income. He recounted the financial and emotional strain he endured, expressing gratitude for the support of those who stood by him during the challenging period.

“I lost friends, producers no longer contacted me for jobs. I lost a lot of money, I lost jobs, and I was jobless. People did not care about me. It was God who directed my footsteps to a good soul,” he shared.

Reflecting on the ordeal, Anuku conveyed his profound sadness over the situation, highlighting the pain and heartbreak he experienced. “I went through pain. If you were in my shoes, you would feel it. I was heartbroken for these people to do this to me.”

Anuku’s candid revelation sheds light on the impact of misinformation and the resilience required to overcome adversity in the entertainment industry.
