Nigeria’s Oil Production Could Hit 2 Million bpd if Security Improves, Currently at 1.7 Million bpd Says NNPC’s Kyari

NNPC’s Kyari Highlights Nigeria’s Untapped Oil Production Potential Despite Security Challenges

Mele Kyari, CEO of Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Limited, revealed that Nigeria’s oil production is nearing 1.7 million barrels per day (bpd). Speaking at a stakeholders’ meeting with the Nigerian Association of Petroleum Explorationists (NAPE) in Lagos, Kyari noted that while current production is up from OPEC’s April report of 1.28 million bpd, the country’s potential output could reach two million bpd if not for the pervasive oil theft and pipeline vandalism in the Niger Delta.

Kyari stressed the significant efforts underway to combat these security issues, which have already shown positive results. He pointed out that during the COVID-19 lockdown in April 2020, production peaked at 2.2 million bpd due to the halt in criminal activities. He highlighted the need for robust infrastructure security to sustain and increase production.

In addressing the challenges, Kyari mentioned the removal of over 5,800 illegal pipeline connections and the dismantling of over 600 illegal refineries. He also criticized the costly and inefficient reliance on barging and trucking oil due to pipeline vandalism.

Kyari underscored the importance of the Ajaokuta-Kaduna-Kano (AKK) gas pipeline project, which is nearing completion and crucial for gas supply infrastructure. He confirmed a $1.1 billion funding release for the project, initially set to be completed in early 2023, which aims to enhance Nigeria’s industrialization through improved gas utilization.
