Court Grants EFCC Chairman’s Request to Halt Contempt Hearing in Yahaya Bello’s Case

Court of Appeal Halts Contempt Proceedings Against EFCC Chairman in Yahaya Bello’s Case

The Court of Appeal in Abuja has directed a stay of proceedings in the contempt charge brought against the Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Mr. Ola Olukoyede, regarding the impending trial of former Governor Yahaya Bello of Kogi State.

Justice Jamil Abdullahi of the Kogi State High Court had summoned Olukoyede to appear before him on May 13 to explain why he should not be imprisoned for allegedly disobeying court orders related to Bello’s case.

Bello had accused the EFCC Chairman of flouting a court order by attempting to arrest him at his Abuja residence. He argued that the EFCC’s actions were in violation of a court ruling and initiated contempt proceedings against Olukoyede.

However, the Court of Appeal granted two motions filed by Olukoyede’s legal team, led by Mr. Jubrin Okutekpa, SAN. The court ordered a stay of execution of the summon and allowed processes to be served on Bello through substituted means.

A three-member panel of justices led by Justice Joseph Oyewole found merit in the ex parte applications and fixed May 20 for the substantive appeal to be heard.

The ruling effectively puts a pause on the contempt proceedings against the EFCC Chairman in the case involving Yahaya Bello.
