Okonkwo, speaking on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily program, stated that Okupe’s departure became apparent once he stepped down from his role, as there was no indication of further engagement with the party.

Okonkwo questioned the concept of party ideology in Nigeria, pointing out that Okupe, who has been affiliated with multiple parties, should be focusing on spending time with his grandchildren at his age.

Okupe had resigned from the Labour Party on January 8, 2024, citing ideological differences after earlier stepping down as the campaign director-general due to a money laundering conviction.
