The most prevalent mobile threats in Africa were adware and mobile banking threats. Notably, Nigeria saw a 94% spike in adware detections, Kenya had a 39% increase, and South Africa saw a 27% rise. Additionally, mobile banking trojans, designed to steal data related to online banking and e-payment systems, were on the rise.

Bethwel Opil, Enterprise Client Lead at Kaspersky in Africa, emphasized the need for proactive mobile cybersecurity measures due to the increasing smartphone adoption and mobile banking in Africa. Cybercriminals are evolving their tactics, targeting not only mobile transactions but also exploiting outdated software, which is common in Africa.

To protect against mobile cyberthreats, Kaspersky recommends:

– Downloading apps only from official stores like the Apple AppStore or Google Play.
– Regularly updating operating systems and apps.
– Being cautious about app permissions, such as access to the camera, microphone, photos, and contacts.
– Using a trusted mobile security solution like Kaspersky Premium.
– Avoiding jailbreaking or rooting devices to maintain automatic security updates.

Opil stressed that mobile cybersecurity requires a holistic approach, combining technology, user education, and industry collaboration. Kaspersky is committed to enhancing Africa’s mobile cybersecurity landscape to ensure safe mobile technology use.
