Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe!Peter Obi, the 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, has urged ECOWAS leaders to prioritize dialogue and diplomacy in their efforts to restore democracy in Niger Republic. ECOWAS has been grappling with restoring political stability after the military toppled and detained President Mohamed Bazoum on July 26.
In an extraordinary summit in Abuja, Nigeria, ECOWAS ordered the deployment of its standby force to restore democracy in Niger. However, Peter Obi emphasized the need for diplomacy in resolving the crisis. He stated that allowing the people of Niger to transition back to a representative democratic government through their national institutions is crucial.
Obi acknowledged the importance of discouraging military dictatorships in West Africa but stressed that diplomacy should take precedence over armed deterrence. He applauded the efforts of Gen. Abdulsalami Abubakar, Sultan of Sokoto Muhammadu Sa’ad Abubakar, and Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, as well as ECOWAS authorities for remaining open to conflict resolution options.
Obi emphasized that the crisis in Niger requires a multilateral coalition involving Nigeria, ECOWAS, the African Union (AU), and the United Nations (UN) to facilitate a return to democratic constitutional order. He asserted that Nigeria’s leadership role should play a significant part in this process.
