Ajax coach John Heitinga has hailed Super Eagles defender, Calvin Bassey as a top professional, despite his limited role in the team lately.
Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe!Bassey joined Ajax in the summer in a record deal and missed the first three games in the Eredivisie, before returning to enjoy a regular run in the team.
The former Leicester City star has lost his place in the team following a dip in form and Ajax’s poor performances which led to the sack or Alfred Schreuder.
Schreuder was sacked last month due to the club’s poor form.
He was replaced by youth coach John Heitinga until the end of the season.
Bassey has only started once in six games under the new coach.
Heitinga has reserved special praise for Bassey despite his lack of regular playing time under him.
“Calvin is a top professional. He comes from Glasgow and knows a different way of playing,” Heitinga told ESPN per football Scotland.
“In Holland, a lot is demanded of the ball and you play with a lot of space behind you.
“He can defend. We have to help him and make sure he has plenty of opportunities, but we know how long the rest of the season is. We are going to need him.”
The 23-year-old will be hoping for a change in fortunes as the club aims to get their season back on track, starting with a Europa League clash with Union Berlin on Thursday night.
