Real Madrid suffered a 1-0 loss to Real Mallorca  to put paid to their chances of closing the gap on Barcelona in the La Liga title race.

The defending champions are five points behind leaders Barcelona and the Blaugrana have a chance to make it eight with a win against Sevilla tonight.

Real Madrid dominated possession but were unable to break down the hosts as Vinicius was denied space to wreck havoc.

Real Madrid defender headed in bizarrely into his own net in the 12th minute for the only goal of the encounter.

Marco Asensio missed from the spot just before the hour mark.

Ancelotti’s men were without the services of Karim Benzema, Eder Militao and Thibaut Courtois due to injuries.

“I put my head in the way and bad luck that ball goes straight through the top left angle… This is football,”

Nacho told Movistar Plus.
“But we also missed a penalty, had some clear chances that we have not managed to score.

“It was a very difficult match. They defended very well throughout the game… A pity, because we are missing three points.”

Barcelona, who are unbeaten in 14 games will go eight points clear of their rivals if they beat struggling Sevilla on Sunday night.

Real Madrid travel to Morocco on Monday for the FIFA World Club Cup where they will take on Al Ahly on Wednesday in the semi final.
