Awoniyi finished off a blistering run from Brennan Johnson with a tap-in in the 27th minute to give Nottingham Forest the lead and ultimately the maximum points to condemn Southampton to their fourth straight loss.
Awoniyi was named the Man of the Match in the 1-1 draw against Chelsea on Sunday and he continued his impressive form at the St Mary’s Stadium.
The last time he scored was against Liverpool in October, he has had to endure a nine-hour goal drought before finding joy again on Wednesday night.
Awoniyi has now scored four goals in 16 appearances for Nottingham Forest in the Premier League after joining from Union Berlin in the summer.
Awoniyi’s international teammate, Emmanuel Dennis continues to enjoy a frustrating time on the bench at the City Ground, he was an unused substitute in the game.
Another Super Eagles star, Joe Aribo was in action for Southampton after coming off the bench in the 64th minute.
The win moved Nottingham Forest out of the relegation zone with 17 points and in the 15th position, while Southampton at firmly rooted in the bottom of the log on 12 points.
