The Federal Government (FG) has stated that it intends to amend key statutes and codes to enforce the operational conditions of Twitter in Nigeria on other social media platforms.

The minister of information and culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, revealed the above mentioned in Cairo during a meeting with his counterpart, Egypt’s Minister of Communication and Information Technology, Dr. Amir Talaat.

During his meeting with Talaat, the minister revealed that Nigeria was amending its National Broadcasting Act and Broadcasting Code to ensure that all online platforms operating in the country comply with the stipulated conditions.

According to Mohammed, the decision was based on a recent development regarding the suspension of Twitter operations in the country and an agreement established before the suspension was lifted.

“Anything that pertains to Twitter will apply to all other social media platforms, be it WhatsApp, Facebook, and others. That is why we will conduct a retreat to amend the NBC Act and the NBC Code to reflect the new gains obtained through the engagement with Twitter”, he said.

According to the minister, the federal government will apply the agreement reached with Twitter to other online platforms, and the microblogging site has agreed to establish a Nigerian office in the first quarter of 2022.

He said Twitter committed to appointing a designated country representative within one month of the suspension being lifted and that its global policy team would be accessible to engage with the government directly.

According to the minister, Twitter agreed to comply with all regulatory requirements, including the Companies and Allied Matters Act, Nigeria Communication Commission regulations and guidelines, and the National Broadcasting Commission Code.

“We were glad that after seven months of serious engagement with Twitter, we can say that what we accomplished exactly what the suspension of twitter’s operations was all about”, he said.
