Enugu, Nov. 24, 2020 The Federal Government has started remedial works on major federal roads in Enugu State, the Federal Controller of Works, Federal Ministry of Works, Enugu, Mr Olufemi Oyekanmi has said.

Oyekanmi, who disclosed this on Tuesday in Enugu while inspecting ongoing works on some of the roads, said that the intervention was to ensure the safety of commuters during the Yuletide.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the projects inspected include, the rehabilitation of the 15km dual carriage 9th Mile section of Onitsha-Enugu Expressway by Reynolds Construction Company (Nig.) Ltd. (RCC).

The work included a bypass at 9th Mile.

There is also the rehabilitation of the 90km Old Enugu—Onitsha Road (Opi Junction-Ukehe-Okpatu-Udi—Oji River to Anambra) by Arab Contractors.

Oyekanmi said that the aim was to ensure that Nigerians had a pleasant Christmas experience.

He said that it was a deliberate policy of the ministry to ensure that major roads across the country and irrespective of their contractual status were good enough for use during festive seasons.

The controller said that he was delighted that the federal government was at the verge of completing rehabilitation work on the Enugu bound section of the Enugu—Onitsha Expressway.

He said that he was particularly delighted at the award of the contract to rehabilitate the 9th Mile section of the Enugu—Onitsha Expressway at the cost of N2.64 billion.

He said that the contract would see to the complete recovery of the deplorable Ugwu Onyeama section of the road up to 82 Division, Abakpa Nike which had caused unimaginable loss of lives and property.

“This is obviously the worst section of the road but the work was officially handed over to the contractor two weeks ago.

“At this time of the year, it is a policy of the ministry to make the roads motorable and that is what we are doing here.

“We have extracted the commitment of the contractor that this work will be hastened,” he said.

Oyekanmi said that the target of the ministry was to ensure that at least, one lane of the dual carriage way was completely rehabilitated from 9th Mile to 82 Division before Christmas.

He said that the move would lessen the difficulties encountered by road users and appealed to commuters to be patient.

Responding, the Project Manager, RCC, Mr Harel Vaknin, said that the construction company would do its best to deliver the job.
