Abuja, Nov. 5, 2020 The League Management Committee (LMC) of Nigeria Volleyball Federation (NVBF) on Thursday said the top four teams in the federation’s elite and division one leagues would compete for its Super Cup.
Prof. Olatunde Morakinyo, Chairman of the LMC, disclosed that the Super Cup competition would hold at the University of Ilorin Sports Complex from Nov. 19 to Nov. 29.
“The top four teams in the Nigeria Volleyball Premier League and also in the National Division One League will converge in Ilorin for the Super Cup.
“We took this decision immediately the Presidential Task Force (PTF) on COVID-19 lifted the ban on contact sports.
”This was after the LMC concluded that the best way to preserve our yearly programmes is to organise a top eight, which consists of the best four teams in the Premier League and the best four teams in the National Division One”.
He said the decision to hold the Super Cup competition was to ensure volleyball players in the country participate in a tournament after a very long time.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that there had been no competition organised by the NVBF and state associations since a lockdown was imposed in the country in March.
The lockdown was imposed following the COVID-19 outbreak, and the ban on contact sports was only lifted recently.
“Following the situation we have all found ourselves, the Super Cup will particularly help keep some players fit ahead of the 20th National Sports Festival (NSF) if it is going to hold this year,” Morakinyo said.
He added that this development meant that the Super Cup was replacing the Premier League and Division One on the federation’s calendar for this year.
