Abuja, Oct. 24, 2020 Regular vaccination for children is a necessity to sustain Nigeria’s zero polio status and to stave the recurrence of the debilitating disease, Dr Sylvia Anthony-Eweputanna, a paediatrician at the Federal Medical Centre, Owerri, has said.

UNICEF set Oct. 24 of every year aside as the World Polio Day to provide an opportunity to highlight global efforts being made to end polio globally.

It is also a day set aside to honour the tireless contributions of those on the frontlines in the fight to eradicate polio worldwide.

Speaking with journalists on Saturday in Abuja over the phone, Dr. Antony-Eweputanna said that now that Nigeria had become polio-free, efforts must be made to ensure that the disease does not rear its head in the country again,

“The fact that we have not registered any case of wild polio in the recent past is a good one but we continue to encourage vaccination against the scourge, more so since it could be brought from across the borders with other countries,’’ she said.

She emphasised the imperatives of advocacy as the roadmap towards sustaining the country’s zero polio status.

She explained that advocacy on the importance of vaccine through trusted community leaders was key to engaging the people positively to change their attitudes toward polio vaccination.
