Arewa House marks Golden Jubilee Oct. 31

Kaduna, Oct. 24, 2020 The Arewa House Center for Historical Documentation and Research, will mark its Golden Jubilee on Oct. 31, its Director, Dr Shuaibu Aliyu, said on Saturday in Kaduna.

Aliyu who made the disclosure in a press briefing, said two papers would be presented during the event.

Aliyu said that the first paper, ‘Unfinished greateness towards a more parfect union in Nigeria’, will be presented by Kayode Fayemi, Ekiti State Governor and Chairman of Nigerian Governors Forum, with Namadi Sambo, former Vice President, as Chairman.

The director added that the second paper will be presented by Prof. Suleiman Bogoro, Executive Secretary, Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFUND).

He said that the paper is titled ‘Access to Education, compelling leadership obligation of the Northern elites.

The director added that former Kano State Governor, Sen. Ibrahim Shekarau will serve as Chairman.

Aliyu stressed that the Centre has been playing crucial role in research and development and has attracted patronage from scholars not only in the country, but also in Europe, Africa, America and Middle East.

He explained that in the last 50 years, Arewa House had undertaken so many activities largely focused on promotion of national unity and the development of the country.

According to him, the Centre serves as a political bridge between the north and the south, and has never concentrated its focus on the nothern region alone.

“We largely cross the bridge and invite people from other parts of the country”, he said, adding that conferences had been organised on the national question, education and other issues of importance.

Aliyu said the center also partner with many reputable international centres to deepen research and development.

“Indeed, Arewa House is the only centre that is established to serve actually as the catalyst for nothern unity and the country at large.”

The director noted that it also has a museum to promote and preserve the culture and heritage of the people, as well as one of the best library in the country that has been attracting scholars and researchers from across the globe.

“Apart from that, we undertake a lot of academic researches, not only relating to academics, but so many other aspects.

On education, Aliyu said that the centre has contributed greatly in encouraging access to education in the northern states.

“On that, every year from 2000 to 2008, we organise educational summit.

“Also in 2004, we partnered with nothern state governors to organise a peace confrence particularly at that critical period when the major issues bedevillig nothern Nigeria was religious conflicts.

“The centre is trying to initiate a center for peace, so that we can start researching and mobilizing communities to educate and enlighten the larger society about the imperative of peace and peaceful coexistence.”

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Arewa House was established in 1970 by Northern state governors to immortalise the legacies of the late Premier of the region, Sir Ahmadu Bello.

It has remained globally recognised in promoting political, economic, educational and social development of northern Nigeria and the country at large.
