Damaturu, Sept. 30,2020 Mr Ali Isah, Controller of Corrections (CCs), Yobe Correctional Service Command, on Wednesday sought the support of the Legal Aid Council (LAC) in decongesting custodial centres.
Isah, made the call when officials of the LAC visited him in Damaruru.
”We appreciate the numerous legal services rendered by the council but a lot needs to be done to assist inmates who cannot afford legal service and those detained for petty criminal offence.
The CCs thanked the council for the visit and assured of a robust collaboration with LAC for effective Criminal Justice Administration.
Earlier, LAC Co-ordinator, Mr Yusuf Shelleng, said his team was in Yobe on a familiarization tour of the controller who was recently posted to the state.
He noted that the increasing number of inmates awaiting trial in custodial centres across the country was a matter of great concern.
Shelleng said that the introduction of non-custodial services in the Nigerian Correctional Service Act 2019 would help in decongesting the centres in no small measure.
Shelleng listed other benefits of the Act to include reformation, rehabilitation and reintegration of offenders to become better citizens.
