Stop playing politics with insecurity in Nigeria — Northern group urges citizens

Sokoto, Sept. 15, 2020 Northern Elders Forum For Peace and Unity, an NGO, has advised Nigerians to stop playing politics with security matters.

A statement signed by the forum’s Secretary, Dr Haruna Aliyu-Rabah, issued to newsmen on Tuesday in Sokoto, urged Nigerians to eschew ethnic differences and partner with one another against all forms of insecurity.

”Insecurity have no party affiliation or respect for politics and we are all guilty of silence and poor support to governments.

”It’s disheartening loosing some senior officers of Federal Road Safety Corps, (FRSC) in the cold hands of death following attack by Kidnappers on their way to a special course,” it said.

The forum noted that, while the officers died in active service, some politicians were using their wealth and connection to create another crisis.

”The nation’s security has failed and this is consuming many national intellectuals and potential leaders.

”It’s on record that this insecurity is escalating especially this time, but instead of collective action, we rather choose to be sentimental and egocentric against our political interest not our people that have suffered.

”What may happen when our people continue to play politics with issues of security will not do well to our people.”

It criticised a recent demonstration at the Police headquarters in Zamfara by “some hired and ill motivated youths”, over ongoing investigation of some politicians alleged to be collaborating with bandits in the state.

”Police in Zamfara state ought to have been given time to explain more about their findings and take any actions according to the rule of law,” it stated.

“Nigerians need to complement the President’s efforts through proper intelligence assistance to security agencies.

”There is no sacred cow on issues that affect wellbeing and survival of majority of Zamfara residents and those flying the routes as travellers or for businesses.

”We must commend the efforts of the present leadership of Zamfara state over their action to ensure reduction of attacks and banditry, in order to secure lives and properties in the state.

”May Allah expose all persons or group of people that support and sponsor any act of creating insecurity or financing the criminals, and bring an end to all criminalities,” it added.
