Minor in court for allegedly violating Benue anti-open grazing law

Makurdi, Sept 10, 2020 A 14-year-old herder, on Thursday appeared in a Chief Magistrates’ Court in Makirdi for allegedly violating the Anti-Open grazing Law in Benue.

The police charged the minor
with Open Nomadic Livestock Rearing and Grazing punishable under Section 19(2) of the Open Grazing Prohibition and Ranches Establishment Law of Benue, 2017.

The Prosecution Counsel, Insp. Hyacinth Gbakor told the court that the Commander of Livestock Guard, Benue, Mr Linus Zaki and team arrested the defendant on Sept 7, 2020 and took him to the state CID, Makurdi.

He alleged that the defendant was arrested around the Northbank area of Makurdi on Sept 7, with his cows.

Chief Magistrate, Mr Vincent Kor, held that the defendant was a noted minor.
Kor held that the court had no jurisdiction over the matter.

He therefore, transferred the matter to the state Juvenile Court, Makurdi.
He however, granted bail to the accused person in the sum of N200,000 with one surety in like sum.
