Kano, Sept. 8, 2020 Dr Yahaya Bunkure, the Provost, Sa’adatu Rimi College of Education, Kano, has called on the Kano State House of Assembly to provide enabling legislations, to fast track implementation of the 65-year retirement age for lecturers.

Bunkure made the call when members of the college management paid a courtesy visit to the Speaker, Abdulazeez Gafasa, on Tuesday in Kano.

He said the call was imperative for the upward review of the retirement age from the existing 60 to 65-years.

The provost noted that the institution was losing some of its best brain and experienced staff to the existing laws which compel lecturers to retire at 60-years of age.

Bunkure lamented that Kano was left behind in the implementation of the 65-years retirement age for lecturers among states in the northern part of the country.

The provost noted that the trend was a major challenges facing the institution because most of the experienced lecturers were retiring without replacement.

“We are calling on the legislature to assist us towards the review and implementation of the retirement age, so that our students can gain more from the lecturers.

“I also wish to inform the assembly that so far 20 of our academic staff have retired and soon another 37 will also go on retirement.

“There is no plan so far to replace them, therefore, we are appealing to the assembly to also facilitate the replacement of the staff.”

Bunkure disclosed that 103 lecturers had obtained PhD degrees with the support of the institution.

According to him, the institution is offering degree programmes in affiliation with the Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria and Bayero University Kano (BUK).

Also speaking, Gafasa commended the college management for their efforts towards improving the education standard in the State.

Gafasa reiterated commitment to the implementation of the retirement age and possible replacement of the retired teachers.
