Last week lockdown order was reimposed in Antananarivo the country’s capital due to a surge in the number of positive cases and deaths. A number of people have died since then as well as some of the country’s lawmakers.
President Andry Rajoelina of Madagascar on Sunday made public the death of two lawmakers after contracting COVID-19, over twenty other lawmakers are said to be receiving treatment.
A senator and a member of the lower chambers were amongst those that died. 14 senators and 11 members of the lower chambers also tested positive to the virus.
The president had earlier dispelled social media reports that he had tested positive to COVID-19. Madagascar is one of the most affected countries by the virus in the Southern African region and the most affected island nation on the continent.
