Edo 2020: PDP accuse gov. Obaseki of emptying state’s treasury through huge debts

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Edo State on Sunday accused Governor Godwin Obaseki of “emptying” the treasury through huge debts.

It warned its governorship aspirants to brace up to the challenge of inheriting an empty treasury when the party takes over from the All Progressives Congress (APC) administration.

PDP State Chairman, Chief Dan Orbih, dared Obaseki to declare the state’s indebtedness.

He spoke at Fugar in Etsako Central Local government during a sensitisation rally ahead of the party’s primaries.

Orbih said Edo was the second most indebted state in Nigeria.

According to him, the internal wrangling in the Edo APC was robbing the people the dividends of democracy.

“I want to challenge Governor Godwin Obaseki to disclose the state of indebtedness to the people of the state

“Somebody whispered to me that he has a record to show that as at today Edo is the second most indebted state in Nigeria.

“That is why am calling on all our governorship aspirants to be prepared for hard times because they are going to inherit an empty treasury.

“We must show that we have all it takes to turn around the economy of our state. With all the aspirants that we have, the best is yet to come.

“The governorship aspirants in the PDP are a crop of young men who have what it takes to rule this state.

“The APC members, instead of giving us good governance, are busy fighting and killing themselves. If you find any gathering like this, another faction will come to drive them away.

“We don’t need this kind of situation in our state and the only solution to put an end to this peculiar political mess is to vote PDP back to the government.”

But, Obaseki asked the PDP prove the allegation that the state treasury is empty.

His Special Adviser on Media and Communication Strategy, Mr Crusoe Osagie, described the allegations as completely false and full of lies.

Osagie said the Debt Management Office (DMO) praised Obaseki for being prudent in borrowing.

He said the DMO Director-General, Mrs Patience Oniha, confirmed Edo was not among the states that borrow commercially during her speech at the last Alaghodaro summit.

Osagie stated that the DMO boss said Edo had been prudent in managing debt and that the figures the state had achieved in revenue had been impressive.

“There is no such thing as Orbih claimed. Information of state indebtedness is not a secret.

“If Orbih is saying the state treasury is empty, he should show proof. It is a false statement,” Osagie saidAX
