The U.S. dollar too continued its years-long climb.
The Dow Jones industrials gained 326.15 points or 1.25% to 26,325.25.
The Nasdaq Composite strengthened 116.51 points or 1.48% to 7,973.39.
The Standard ands Poor’s 500 added 36.64 points or 1.27% to 2,924.58.
The euro wilted to 1.1057 on Thursday, while the British pound slid to 1.2180.
The Japanese yen weakened to 106.50. The Swiss franc eased to 0.9867.
The Canadian dollar was a fraction lower at 1.3296. The Australian and New Zealand dollars were sharply lower at 0.6727 and 0.6308.
In overseas equity markets the German Dax rose 1.18%. In Paris the CAC 40 climbed 1.51%.
London’s FTSE 100 added 0.98%.
In Asia, the Nikkei 225 in Japan was off 18.49 points or 0.09% at 20,460.93.
The Shanghai Composite in China dipped 2.84 points or 0.10% to 2,890.92.
The Australian All Ordinaries added 4.90 points or 0.07% to 6,605.70.
