“Submission.” Why do some wives (or some women in general) look upon this word in such a negative way. Some even have an adverse or defensive reaction when “submit to your husband” is mentioned. Why is that? I’m sure that some reading this may not like what I will say about submission. That’s just fine, since I’m comfortable with what I’m about to say because I’m speaking about submission from a Biblical perspective.

Submission, in a non-Biblical sense, is sometimes viewed as a sign of weakness, powerlessness, or being beneath someone. Some don’t like the idea of having to submit to ANYONE. Is this a rebellious nature coming out? Over the years, some women have become more independent and have an “I can make it on my own” mentality. Women have gained a greater sense of power with the many opportunities they now have. Fewer wives have the desire to stay home to be keepers of the home (this is even looked upon as a waste of time or simply a negative role). Women are getting out there in the workforce, being successful in their careers, advancing, leading, etc. This is offering a sense of power and self-worth, to some.

It’s possible that some fail to realize or understand the “Biblical” meaning of submitting to your husband. It’s definitely not negative in any way. It’s a blessing to be able to submit! Yes, I said “It’s a blessing!” Do you know why? Because submission is not really about you serving your husband. It’s about serving the Lord. So, when you ask yourself “Why should I submit to my husband?” You should really ask yourself “Why should I submit to the Lord?” Ephesians 5:21-22 reads: “Submitting yourselves one to another in the fear of God. Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as unto the Lord.”

As a Christian wife, your desire should be to serve the Lord faithfully…unwavering and with gladness! You strive to please the Lord our God in all that you do. Now, if God is telling wives to submit ourselves to our husbands “as unto the Lord,” we must be obedient. It should be our desire to submit and to please God.

When you accept Christ as your Lord and Savior, you make the choice to submit yourself fully to Him. This is a part of accepting Christ into your life…your heart. You nurture a deep and intimate relationship with Him. Why do all of this? Because the Lord is your everything! You love Him! He is your rock, the lover of your soul, your comforter. He leads you. He’s your friend. He’s an awesome wonder in your life!!

If you are to submit to your husband as unto the Lord, then you are to love your husband, treat him as if he is your everything, your life, your rock. Allow him to lead and be the head. Your husband should be your best friend. Nurture your relationship with him. Pray for and with him. This is all part of being an obedient wife…not about being obedient to a man, but being obedient to God. And, being obedient to God should bring great joy to your heart! That makes submission to your husband such a wonderful thing! I truly feel that God will bless wives who are submissive to their husbands when they do it out of reverence to God.

I know there are some women who will say that it’s hard to submit to their husband because he is not saved or is not living or striving to be Christ-like. I know this is difficult. You must pray fervently for your husband. Remain moral and keep Christian values throughout the process. Be a living example to show him Christ in you. Remember, God will bless you for your submission out of reverence for Him, even during the tough process. Galatians 6:8-9 (NLT) reads “But those who live to please the Spirit will harvest everlasting life from the Spirit. So don’t get tired of doing what is good. Don’t get discouraged and give up, for we will reap a harvest of blessing at the appropriate time.” You just have to keep in mind that your submission is unto the Lord.

My husband is a blessing from God! He is my best friend and even my teacher. Truthfully, loving him is as natural as taking a breath. I must admit that it helps that God is all over his life and he values the sacredness of marriage. He takes to heart the following scripture: “Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it;…” (Ephesians 5:25)

It is an honor and a joy to submit to my husband because it is an honor and joy to submit to and serve my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. All in all, my submission to him is really about my love for him because of my love for HIM!
