Church to Buhari: give Nigerians relief, to cushion the hardship

Delegates to the 30th Annual Synod of Methodist Church Nigeria, Diocese of Owo, Ondo State, have advised Christians to participate in politics.

They faulted the impression that it was a dirty game, stressing that it will remain so, if spiritually-enlightened minds were not involved.

The synod urged the President Muhammadu Buhari administration to give Nigerians relief, to cushion the hardship.

Delivering his address at the Methodist Church, Isure-Idoani in Ose Local Government, the Diocesan Bishop, Rev. Solomon Adegbite, enjoined Christians in politics to make a difference.

The synod said God gave Nigeria everything, except leadership, adding that it has been the bane of development.

It lamented that most political leaders are only mindful of themselves and their families, to the detriment of the masses.

Rev. Adegbite said: “As things are, we have not had it rosy. The common man cannot afford three square meals. I was shocked recently when hungry Nigerians exhumed chickens buried at a site by Customs officers.

“The situation in the country has worsened. This boils down to bad leadership.

“Insecurity has become part of our daily problems. Herdsmen are on the rampage everywhere. Much is not being done to curb their activities.”

The church called for the principle of federal character in the distribution of offices, saying there was no area in the country that lacked competent hands.

It advised voters to obtain their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) in readiness for the 2019 general election, saying the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) should be unbiased and ensure vote counts.

The synod said the Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu administration in the last one year had brought development to the people.

It cited prompt payment of salary, urging the government to sustain the tempo and ensure no project is abandoned.

The Diocesan Lay President, Oladapo Olawoye, listed challenges facing the diocese, saying the national and global economic downturn was affecting them.
