Ogun govt raises alarm over spread of Lassa fever


ABEOKUTA—The Ogun State Government has raised the alarm over Lassa fever saying the dry season would encourage the spread of the virus in the state.

Commissioner for Health, Dr. Babatunde Ipaye warned people to take be careful so as not to contract the virus adding that this is the Lassa fever season.

Ipaye said this at the flag-off of free 60 Surgery Programme organised by the National Association of Government General Medical and Dentist Practitioners in celebration of the governor’s 60th birthday.

He said the free surgery will be conducted across the three senatorial districts of Ogun State. He advised residents of the state to ensure that they do not come in contact with anyone’s body fluid.

He said: “We have heard of Lassa fever outbreak in some states. Yes, Lassa does come out at times like this. If you look at the seasonal epidemiological trend, it usually comes at the beginning of every dry season.

When people begin to burn bushes, the rats begin to escape into our abode and they come in contact with our food. “We as a state, have always prepared.

Let me remind you that Ogun State was awarded the best state in terms of surveillance and response in 2016 and what we have done is to reinforce those surveillance officers in the 20 local government areas and the 37 Local Council Development Areas, LCDAs in the state to be at alert.”

Speaking on behalf of Governor Amosun, the Deputy Governor, Mrs. Yetunde Onanuga said the celebrant would not have appreciated anything better than giving back to the community.
