The 19-year-old forward is hot property after netting 20 goals in all competitions for Belgian club KAS Eupen this season.

Arsenal have had a £6.8m bid accepted but must increase their financial package to bag him a work permit.

According to the Daily Mail, Nice have matched the Gunners’ bid and believe they can win the race.

The Ligue 1 club can offer Champions League football while work permit rules are more relaxed in France.

Onyekuru received his first cap for Nigeria on Thursday but does not meet the FA’s strict criteria.

Arsenal have been informed they must increase their offer to £7.85m and offer him wages in the region of £35,000-a-week.

Onyekuru has confirmed that Arsenal have made a bid for his services.

“Thierry Henry has always been my idol since I was a kid,” Onyekuru said.

“I was watching him play, watching Arsenal and going to YouTube to watch most of his games

Henry Onyekuru showcases incredible skills with numerous goals

“I remember saying if I had to move to the Premier League I want to be like Thierry Henry, so it’s likely to come true and I’m looking towards it at the moment.

“It’s a good feeling for a club like Arsenal to make a bid for me, this is due to my hard work in training and games.

“I am waiting and working towards it and we’ll see how it goes after the [Nigeria] qualifiers.”

Onyekuru has already turned down moves to Belgian giants Brugge and Anderlecht.
