LASU to confer Honorary Award on Dangote, Alakija and Others


The President and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Dangote Group, Alhaji Aliko Dangote, Mrs. Folorunsho Alakija a Nigerian businesswoman and Chief Adebutu Kessington are amongst eminent Nigerians to receive the  Lagos State University (LASU) honorary doctorate degree in the forthcoming university convocation ceremony.

The Vice Chancellor of the university Professor Olanrewaju Fagbohun made this known on Thursday while addressing newsmen on the pre convocation press conference at the university campus in Ojo.

He said for several years the university refrained from giving honorary awards, but this year the university will be honouring these eminent personalities for their enormous contributions to the betterment of the society.

According to him, Dangote will be awarded Honorary Doctorate Degree of Business; Alakija will be awarded Honorary Doctorate Degree of Arts & Humane Letters and Kessignton Honorary Doctorate Degrees of Science Communication.

Fagbohun further said the university has also instituted award to the rank of Distinguished Professor and have found Professor Peter Okebukola worthy of this rank of Distinguished Professor.

The Vice Chancellor said the convocation ceremony will kick off with a Jumat Prayer today while the convocation lecture titled ‘Beyond education bridging the gap for graduate employability to be delivered by Hakeem Ogunniran, Managing Director UACN Property Development Company on Tuesday March 21.

He also said the award of first degree and diplomas in all faculties and induction of alumni will hold on Wednesday March 22 while the award of higher and honorary doctorate degrees and conferment of rank of distinguished professor will hold on Thursday March 23.

According to him,  the university during this convocation will be graduating a total of 36,489 students with 26 graduating with first class honours, 2,642 with second class honours upper division and 20,412 with second class honours lower division.

He said LASU  has maintained its ranking by the National Universities Commission (NUC) as the best state university in Nigeria, adding that the entire university community is also resolute to ensure that the university do not only maintain this rating but continue to rise till it become the best university in Nigeria.
