Luis Enrique: I am leaving Barcelona, says ‘I need to rest’

Barcelona coach Luis Enrique has announced he will leave the club at the end of this season.

Enrique delivered the news to his players at the Camp Nou after his team had scored six goals in the victory over Sporting Gijon on Wednesday night.

The club confirmed the decision of the Spaniard on social media before he addressed the press.citing the intense pressure he puts on himself in the role.

Citing the intense pressure he puts on himself under, Enrique said, “I won’t be Barcelona coach next season.

“The way I do this job is why I have to leave. There are very few hours to rest. I need to rest.

“I want to thank club for their confidence, and the players for their dedication and professionalism.”

Jorge Sampaoli is widely speculated to take over from the Spaniard following his fine work with Sevilla this season.

Josep Maria Bartomeu, Barcelona president said,”Luis Enrique has brought us great success and he can still bring us more.

“The players are motivated to do it. We accept Luis Enrique’s decision.

“He has been a great a coach. Now is it time to end his spell in the best possible way.”

The 46-year-old former Barcelona player took charge in May 2014 and led the Catalan side to a remarkable Champions League, La Liga, Copa del Rey treble in the 2014/15 season.

Last season, Enrique won La Liga and Copa del Rey titles.
