Disabled persons protest soldier’s assault on member in Onitsha

The Joint National Association of Persons with Disabilities (JONAPWDs) has protested the assault on a disabled man by two soldiers in Onitsha, Anambra State for allegedly wearing a military camouflage clothing.

National President of JONAPWD Ekaete Judith Umoh said in a statement that ensuring justice by the authority would go a long way to assuage the anger the association and also prevent a recur as an injury to one is an injury to all.

“JONAPWD wishes to state that this is an act in contrivance to the fundamental human rights and inimical to the course of the rule of law. We detest vehemently this treatment meted out and call for proper investigation, prosecution and for Justice to take its course in this matter. We also call for the speedy harmonization of the bills passed by both chambers of the National Assembly, we implore President Muhammadu Buhari, to assent to this bill speedily to become law,” Umoh said.

She said that the association believes that this bill when passed into Law will impact positively on the greatest number of persons with disability and forestall recurrence of such inhumane treatments on persons with disabilities in Nigeria.

The Nigerian Army in a statement by its spokesperson, Sani Usman has said it would punish the soldiers responsible for maltreating the physically challenged person.
