The All Progressives Congress (APC) has congratulated the Edo State Governor, Adams Oshiomhole, on his emergence as the Chairman of the South-south Governors’ Forum.
The Chairman of the South south zone of the APC, Hilliard Eta, congratulated Oshiomhole on behalf of the party through a statement issued yesterday.
In the statement signed by his Eta Special Adviser Media and Publicity, Bassey Ita, and made available to journalists in Calabar, the zonal vice-chairman said Oshiomhole has the capability of bringing his wealth of experience in public life and as an architect of grassroots development to bear in the improvement of the socio-economic and environmental status of the South-south region.
He expressed the hope that Oshiomhole will strategically apply the stately carriage and attribute for which he is known in canvassing massive support for regional integration of the South-south states.
Eta said by integrating the South-south states, Oshiomhole would achieve the objective for which the (Bayelsa,Rivers, Akwa Ibom, Delta, Cross Ricer and Edo (BRACED states) Commission was established.
Eta said though the new position imposes additional responsibility on Oshiomhole, he was confident the governor has the ability to rise up to the challenge and define a new sense of direction for the BRACED states.
He said over the years, the BRACED Commission under the leadership of the immediate past chairman and former governor of Cross River State, Liyel Imoke, failed to chat a way out of the multifarious cases of environmental degradation, economic losses and insecurity within the South-south region.
In line with tradition, Oshiomhole would also assume the position of chairman of the BRACED states.
Oshiomhole succeeds Imoke who formally handed over to him on May 27 at the Calabar International Conference Centre (CICC).
The First Ordinary Session of the BRACED States Governors’ Council was held on Monday, June 13, 2011 at the Government House, Port Harcourt, Rivers State.
It was presided over by Imoke, then Governor of Cross River State.
Those who attended the meeting included: Imoke of Cross River state; Chief Timipre Sylva, now former governor, of Bayelsa State; Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi , now former governor, of Rivers State; Oshiomhole of Edo State; Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan , now former governor , of Delta State and Ambassador Joe Keshi, Director-General of the commission.
The meeting approved the formal establishment of the BRACED Commission with the resolve of the states to fully commit their resources to Economic Co-operation and integration of the region.
