A Birnin Kebbi High Court yesterday directed the Kebbi State government to reinstate the dethroned Emir of Gwandu, Al-Mustapha Haruna Jokolo who was deposed in 2005 by the government of former Kebbi State Governor Adamu Aliero.
In his judgement over the propriety of Jokolo’s removal, Justice Abbas Ahman held that Jokolo who was dethroned in 2005 be reinstated back as the 19th emir of Gwandu and all his entitlements paid to him as from the time he was deposed.
Justice Ahman in his three-hour judgement faulted the way and manner Jokolo was deposed by Aliero which according to him did not follow the due process of law and therefore the present emir , Maj Gen. Mohammadu Iliyasu Bashar(rtd) was wrongly installed as the 20th emir of Gwandu.
Shortly after passing the judgement, Sylvester Imhanobe, the lead lawyer to Jokolo told journalists that “ We just give glory to God because since the time he was deposed Jokolo has been very patient. This judgement is a judgement against impunity, this judgement is to ensure compliance with due process but they have room for appeal. Now there is only the 19th emir of Gwandu but not the 20th.”
Responding to newsmen on the matter on behalf of the Kebbi State government the secretary to the state government Garba Rabiu Kamba , called on the general public to be calm as government will appeal against the judgement.
Kamba advised people not engage in any uprising or take the law into their hands as Kebbi is a peaceful state.
It will be recalled that in 2005, Jokolo, the 19th emir of Gwandu was deposed by high-handedness in office and making statements capable of breaching the law. The atmosphere in Birnin Kebbi, the Kebbi State capital after the announcement is generally calm and people are seen discussing the matter with keen interest.
