Vigilance group member docked for alleged manslaughter


The police on Wednesday arraigned a 38-year-old member of a vigilance group, Adisa Ogunmuyiwa, in  an Abeokuta Magistrate’s Court for alleged manslaughter.

The prosecutor, Insp Sunday Eigbejiale,  told the court that the accused was arraigned on a two-count charge of manslaughter and unlawful possession of firearms.

Eigbejiale said the accused committed the offence on Feb. 12 at  about midnight at Orile Kemta Comprehensive High School, Olugbo, near Odede in Abeokuta.

The prosecutor said Ogunmuyiwa, while on a vigilance duty “unlawfully shot one Gbolahan Akinremi  with a locally made single barrel gun.’’

He told the court that the accused also had in his possession three live cartridges without permit.

The prosecutor said the offences contravened sections 317 and 325 of the Criminal Law of Ogun ,2006 and 27 (1) (b) (ii) of the Firearms Act, Cap F 28 of the Laws  of Nigeria, 2004.

The Magistrate, Mr Markins Akinyemi,  admitted the accused, whose plea was not taken,  to bail in the sum of N300,000 with two sureties in like sum.
