Badminton coach urges youths to embrace sports with zest

A former national Number One badminton female player, Bridget Ibeneri, on Wednesday in Lagos urged youths desirous of making sports a means of livelihood to be enthusiastic.

Ibeneri, now a badminton Coach at the National Institute of Sport (Nisports), National Stadium, Lagos, gave the advice in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).

The coach said that an athlete would succeed in his career when he showed much interest in it and remained disciplined.

“During my time as a badminton player, we were all into the sport because we had interest in it.

“Interest is the keyword in achieving one’s aims.

“With discipline and interest, a player will go far in his career; no one wants to be associated with a troublesome athlete,’’ she said.

The 2008 Olympian urged players to de-emphasise monetary rewards but be determined to make their marks.

Ibeneri, who featured at the 2000 All African Badminton Championships in Bauchi, said that repositioning of the sport would start from athletes.

“Repositioning cannot take place when the athletes involved are not disciplined and coordinated.

“Athletes should learn to accept defeat in good faith; sports is not about violence, it is all about peace,’’ she said.
