The UN Special Envoy to the Great Lakes Region, Mary Robinson, is on a two-day visit to Goma, the capital of North Kivu province in the east of the Democratic Republic of Congo.
A source from the UN Mission for Stabilisation of Congo (MONUSCO) made the disclosure on Tuesday.
“The visit is meant to encourage ongoing efforts to consolidate peace in eastern DR Congo as well as the Great Lakes region.
“During her visit, she will meet with provincial authorities, civil society groups as well as MONUSCO officials to discuss ways to consolidate peace in the region,’’ the MONUSCO official added.
The special envoy would hold talks with the founder of Peace One Day, Jeremy Gilley, government officials, representatives of religious groups, UNICEF and the UN Refugee Agency UNHCR to discuss preparations for the Peace One Day concert in Goma on Sept. 14
