The Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) on Tuesday reiterated the need for its officers to be of good behaviour.
Mr Chidi Nkwonta, Lagos Sector Commander of the FRSC, told the News Agency of Nigeria in Lagos that the organisation would prosecute any officer who was caught behaving unprofessionally.
“Any road safety official that violates road traffic rues will face the same penalty as others; we have our surveillance teams that are continuously out there.
“So we are monitoring our men; any of them caught taking bribe will face the mobile court in public, like any other offender.
“They are equally subject to the same rules; if they commit traffic offences, they will also pay the stipulated fines.
“If they use road safety vehicles to commit offences, they will be given tickets; I and several of my other colleagues have issued many tickets our drivers,” he said.
According to him, FRSC officers are adequately trained on how to address motorists.
“Our men know that under no circumstance should they fight offenders except in self defence,” he said.
Nkwonta, who recalled a recent news clip showing two officers of the commission in a physical struggle with a motorist, said under no circumstance was assault permitted.
“Our men were the ones who were being assaulted by a group of thugs.
“Seven of the thugs have been arrested and are currently in the cell; our men are receiving treatment in hospital; my officer was drenched from head to toe with blood.
“As I speak to you, the officers are in hospital; the culprits have been arrested and they are going to be arraigned.
“The matter is with the Police Commissioner, Lagos State,” he said.
